You’ve come to the right place for research resources! Please explore the links below and feel free to stop by the library if need further help finding the right information for your school projects. Some definitions that will be helpful to you:

A database is a collection of related information (data) organized for convenient access. A database is a reliable and accurate research resource. Databases can be trusted to be objective, well-researched and frequently updated. A database is the first place you should go when doing research. If you are accessing BLMS databases from home you will need a user name and a password. Pick up a card with this information in the library.

A search engine like Google can be useful in searching key words and phrases but you must be very careful to evaluate your search results for accuracy, bias, timeliness, etc.

BLMS DATABASES:

World Book Online: A general encyclopedia and a great place to begin research.

eLibrary (ProQuest): Includes magazines, newspapers, books, television/radio transcripts, pictures and more!

History Study Center: A collection of primary and secondary sources on global history from ancient times to the present day

ABC-CLIO: Select links to databases for American History, Ancient Medieval Eras or United States Geography. Information for each is organized by era or by specific historical event.

Facts on File Science Online: Presents a broad range of scientific disciplines through essays, videos, diagrams, definitions, biographies, and experiments.

Facts on File Issues and Controversies: Explores hundreds of hot topics in politics, government, business, society, education, and popular culture.

Facts on File History: Includes these databases: American History Online, Ancient and Medieval History Online, Issues and Controversies in American History, Modern World History Online and U.S. Government Online.

Opposing Viewpoints in Context: Covers controversial current events and helps students research, analyze and organize a broad variety of data for conducting research, completing writing assignments and preparing for debates. Use Issaquah at password prompt.

RECOMMENDED SEARCH ENGINES:

Sweetsearch.com: Search results are limited to sites reviewed by researchers and educators. Clicking on blue text of the webpage summaries will take you to websites. Not downloading pictures will save you time.

Webpath Express: A fairly comprehensive search engine reviewed by librarians. Access this through the BLMS Library catalog. Look for Webpath Express on the left hand menu on the catalog home page. If you get to the unauthorized access screen just click on the little home icon on the top left hand corner and then select Beaver Lake Middle School.
