The Issaquah School District uses an acceleration model that provides ELL students with powerful learning experiences that stress complex, engaging activities and direct teaching of the English language. Language and skill development is accelerated, so students can catch up with their peers.
The curriculum for students receiving ELL support is chosen with great care to meet the needs of each individual. The first choice is to always use the student's current classroom content, and taught within the classroom. At times, to meet student needs, small groups may be pulled to the back of the room to preteach or reteach specific vocabulary or concepts. At other times, students may be pulled to the ELL classroom for greater in-depth intervention --- but always matching content of the general education classroom.
