Missing Music Policy:
If at any point in the school year a student forgets to bring his or her music to class or to rehearsal, the Evergreen policy dictates that that student is required to bring cookies to class for the rest of the orchestra to enjoy. The cookies may be homemade or store-bought, just so long as there is enough for everyone to have one—preferably two. This “punishment” serves two purposes: it serves to remind people to have their music, and it is an enjoyable and positive experience for everyone which makes up for the inconvenience of a member affecting the group because they didn’t have their music.
In Evergreen, seating occurs once or twice per year. The first seating audition occurs in September at the annual Warm Beach Camp orchestra retreat. Evergreen attempts to discourage a focus solely on the competitive nature between sections, and rather focus these efforts on forming a cohesive group of musicians devoted to the community of the orchestra. This being said, if at any time a musician desires to better his position in his section, he may approach his conductor and request a reseating. The conductor reserves the right to dictate whether or not to honor this request.
Music Request Forms:
Oftentimes, a student will need to request a piece of music that he or she has lost, or misplaced. Sometimes a student is absent on the day that a piece is handed out. In order to regain this music, the student will fill out a yellow half-sheet titled “Music Request Form” and hand this piece of paper into either the conductor, or that of a music librarian. This request form is available on the shelf in the corner of the orchestra room at IHS, or on the cart at SHS, in the music library, or upon request. Students must clearly print the name of the piece they wish to receive, his name, instrument, school, and orchestra, and then turn this form in to either his conductor or a music librarian. The requested music will be provided for the student as soon as possible.
Seniors in Evergreen are offered an opportunity to mentor freshman and new members in the orchestra. Often times, individuals just entering the orchestra require guidance when it comes to the adjustment they must make upon establishing an identity in Evergreen. Seniors are able to help new students connect with other upperclassmen, sight read challenging music, find playing venues, or communicate with the director regarding sensitive topics such as seating. This opportunity also allows incoming members to familiarize themselves with upperclassmen so when the time comes to vote for the Niles Scholarship, these new members are familiar with their senior candidates. Seniors who accept the position of “senior mentor” will be expected to regularly touch base with their new member and attempt to make these individuals feel welcome. An introductory time will be established during the Warm Beach Camp retreat at the beginning of the year for seniors to acquaint themselves with their partner. Points will be awarded towards seniors for helping with the senior mentoring. If you are a senior and are interested in a senior mentoring position, please contact your conductor at the beginning of the year.
Warm Beach Camp:
Every year, Evergreen attends an annual retreat to Warm Beach Camp at the beginning of the first semester. This retreat is a way for the orchestra to rehearse and give its members a chance to get to know one another. The retreat lasts for a weekend, and members choose cabins to bunk in, and skits to perform. Students will receive more information about Warm Beach Camp closer to the time of the retreat, including an itinerary, a list detailing what to pack, as well as information on where to obtain permission forms.
Participating in Evergreen involves some expenses. We deal with all of our payments through ASB, so any payments made must be made through your bookkeeper and all checks payable to your school.
The cost of going to Warm Beach Camp is about $120 per student, not including any extra money the student may bring with them.
Every year, a year-specific Evergreen sweatshirt is designed and made available for sale within the orchestra. Usually, students interested in taking control of this project will print up a design, and members of the orchestra may decide whether or not they wish to purchase one. Sweatshirts can be anywhere from $25-$35.
When Evergreen participates in competitions and invitationals, transportation is always provided, but students are expected to bring their own money to pay for food and anything else they may wish to buy.
Regarding concert attire, the cost of a men’s tuxedo purchase is about $115 per year. Information regarding the process by which a tuxedo can be purchased will be provided at the beginning of the year.
For students who need to rent instruments from the district for their classes (for example, celli and basses who can’t bring their own instruments to school each day), there is an instrument rental fee of $150 per year, or $75 per semester.
For all Evergreen concerts, audience members must purchase tickets. For most standard concerts, Adult tickets are $8 each and student/senior tickets are $5 each. However, individuals can purchase season passes for $35 and families can purchase season passes for $55, covering the whole family. Special event concerts such as “Swingin’ in Vienna” have a different cost structure.
End of Year Awards:
At the end of the school year, awards are given to certain individuals in the orchestra. These awards are for “Most Inspirational,” “Most Achieved,” and the “Director’s Award.” The awards for Most Inspirational and Most Achieved are determined by a collective vote within the orchestra. This vote occurs at the end of the year and a plaque is awarded to each winner at the Season Finale Concert. The Director’s Award is given to an individual chosen by Mr. Longman himself.
The final exam for the first semester is a test of knowledge over music terminology. The first semester final requires memory of music terms as well as knowledge of music keys. A full set of the music terms included in the test is available on the Evergreen connect website, under “Music Terms.”
The final exam for the second semester is the recording sessions for producing our annual CD. These recording sessions are typically in mid June, and often a series of days such as Sunday through Tuesday. These are required, as it is essential to have all orchestra members available for the recordings – please be sure to consult the calendar for these very important dates.
Members of the orchestra can sign up to help set up the stage for rehearsals and other events throughout the year. Those who volunteer their time and energy will be rewarded with points towards lettering.
Music Library Staff:
In order to keep Evergreen’s processes effective and efficient, music library staff is required. Included in the responsibilities of working in the music library are making copies of music, organizing the enormous collection of music in the library, and making music resources available to the orchestra. Working in the music library is a great way to be involved in the music department. Those who commit themselves to working in the music library will be rewarded with points towards lettering. If you are interested in volunteering to work in the music library, please ask Mr. Longman, or contact Sophie Wang.
UW Invitational/Orchestral Competitions:
Evergreen frequently participates in competitions in the area, including the UW Invitational and the Orchestra 1 festival. At these events, Evergreen will be exposed to esteemed adjudicators who will give pointers to the group, and later practice conducting and rehearsing the orchestra in private to provide feedback regarding the performance.
Musical Pit Orchestra and graduation music:
Evergreen Philharmonic is the official pit orchestra for the IHS music production each year. This year, we are scheduled to perform “Carousel” by Rodgers and Hammerstein in March. Rehearsals for this event will begin in January. At the end of the year, we invite others to audition and join the orchestra as we play for one of the high school’s graduation. Our seniors are (of course!) excused from this performance.
Mith and Lisa Niles are benefactors who donate scholarship money to graduating seniors in Evergreen annually. These scholarships are awarded based on merit, and are determined by orchestra member input, as well as various interviews and scholarship applications. As we near the end of the school year, non-applicant students are required to send Mith and Lisa Niles an email in which they state which applicant they believe deserves the scholarship, as well as an explanation supporting their opinion.
Lettering is an opportunity available for all students in the orchestra to accumulate points through various musical involvements, and then achieve a “letter” or certificate of honor at the season finale concert for their efforts. Towards the end of the year, students assess their yearlong participation and then award themselves points accordingly, eventually earning them a letter once 500 points or more is acquired. Once this amount is reached, any extra points are discarded, and the tally starts again. For those students who do not earn enough points in a year to letter, those points will be recorded and can be used the following year to reach the goal of 500.
Concerto competition and rules:
These are guidelines – exceptions may be made for programming reasons, or depending upon the quantity or quality of the auditions.
Individuals can only be chosen to solo twice during his/her high school career.
Individuals can be part of a concerto group or perform a solo, but not both (An individual can audition for both, but the conductor may only choose one if either group is accepted)
Bellewood Retirement Home is a retirement community where Evergreen ensembles frequently perform in small, informal recitals. Quartets prepare music to perform on set dates which generally fall on one Thursday out of each month. These events provide opportunities for small ensembles to practice performing in front of a group, as well as to provide the residents who live there with the gift of music. Anyone can perform, as long as s/he spends an adequate amount of time and effort rehearsing his piece, and as long as Mr. Longman has a chance to hear the piece prior to the performance.
Solo and Ensemble
Solo and Ensemble is an annual state-wide and regional competition held for high school students between grades 9-12 of any instrumental or choral class. Students are permitted to perform a solo, or participate in a small or large ensemble in front of a judge who offers verbal and written critique and when applicable decide on winners in each category. These winners then advance from district competitions to represent their schools at state competition in Ellensburg, WA. Pieces must be less than 8.5 minutes long, and students will have the opportunity to sign up for one of these positions through his/her orchestra director. Ratings given at the competition range from a 1+ (Most superior rating achievable—indicates mastery of a piece and qualifies an individual to be considered for state) and a 5- (Indicates a very poor performance and mastery of a piece performed for a judge during the competition and does not qualify for state consideration). While Evergreen students are encouraged to participate, there is certainly no grade requirement or credit awarded other than extracurricular points achieved at the end of the year towards lettering in orchestra.
