During May 7-18, we will have 560 students taking over 1000 Advanced Placement (AP) exams.  We are looking for parent volunteers who can help with checking students in, passing out materials, supervising during breaks, and other logistics.  The number of volunteers needed depends on the number of students taking the exam.  Each exam will have a staff member proctor who will go through all of the instructions with the students and ensure that AP procedures are followed.  Electronics are not allowed in the testing room, so volunteers need to bring a book or another quiet activity for down time.  Note: According to College Board rules, you cannot volunteer for an exam that your student is taking this year

Volunteers can sign up here: www.SignUpGenius.com/go/5080845ADA928A3FC1-aptesting

If you have any questions about volunteering, reach out to the AP Coordinator, Erin Armstrong (armstronge2@issaquah.wednet.edu ).

Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is the leading cause of sudden death in exercising “at-play” young people and is typically the result of an undiagnosed structural or electrical problem.  Unlike a heart attack where the heart will continue to try pumping blood, SCA is the sudden onset of an abnormal and lethal heart rhythm that causes the heart to stop. SCA strikes without warning for a number of reasons including genetic factors and cardiac abnormalities, and can develop as an adolescent or young adult. SCA is more likely to occur during exercise or physical activity, placing athletes with undiagnosed heart conditions at greater risk. SCA can also occur from a direct blow to the chest by a firm projectile (baseball, softball, lacrosse ball, or hockey puck) or by chest contact from another player. The symptoms of sudden cardiac arrest?  Sudden collapse, no pulse, no breathing, and loss of consciousness. A shock from a defibrillator is the only thing that can save a person in cardiac arrest.         Integrated screening programs utilizing ECG (electrocardiogram) offer the only model proven to reliably identify children at risk for SCA, and the only model with evidence suggesting early detection can reduce the rate of SCA in young people.

The goals of the Nick of Time screening program are:

    • To detect hidden heart conditions with the potential for sudden death in the young
    • To reduce SCA through early detection & appropriate medical interventions & activity modification
    • To raise awareness and educate schools and communities about SCA, warning symptoms, and the value of heart screening

    What happens during a screening?

The Nick of Time Youth Heart Screen consists of:  reviewing a Heart Health Survey investigating signs and symptoms/family history of a cardiac condition, taking blood pressure & performing a physical exam and ECG. An on-site echocardiogram is conducted in cases with a positive finding on history, physical exam, or ECG. Each screen takes approximately 45 minutes including CPR-AED training.

When will the screenings take place?

Wed, April 4, 2018 at Liberty High School Main Gym, 9am – 3pm

How can I register my student?

A completed Heart Health Survey must be submitted BY NOON FRIDAY, MARCH 30 in order to get an appointment time.  Submit the survey to the Liberty Athletic Office either by dropping it off or scan/email Janine Menezes at menezesj@issaquah.wednet.edu.  Heart screens are available by appointment only on a first come, first served basis for any child, athlete or not, ages 14-24 years, regardless where enrolled in school. We will contact you with your student’s appointment time.

Questions regarding registration? Contact Janine Menezes, Athletic Secretary, at menezesj@issaquah.wednet.edu, 425.837.4806.

Students who are not testing (9th, 11th, and 12th graders) will be assigned to classrooms for Guided Study work time  Students can use this time to complete homework, catch up on missing work, and/or retake assessments.  Please note that the end of the quarter is Friday, April 6, so this is a great time to make sure everything is caught up!
