Well, we are in for another year of remote learning! I don't know about you, but I certainly wasn't expecting that we'd be starting the year this way when we ended the last school year. I'm eager to kick off the year with our students, but am struggling with the fact that we won't get to see each other in person yet. Even still, I am going to work hard with Apollo administrators, classroom teachers, and other student support staff to ensure that our Apollo Rockets receive the best remote learning experience that we can provide.
My plan for the start of the year is to be available for families that need extra supplies or help with accessing district supports. I will also be visiting class meetings with our new PBSES Coach, Stephanie Wallace, to remind students of our role at the school.
Throughout the fall, I will be working with students in need of 504 accommodations and their families, conducting student lunch bunches, and looking for ways to support students and families with their social-emotional well-being and mental health. Be on the lookout for a parent survey coming soon to provide input on helpful supports during remote learning.
Please feel free to reach out to me by text, phone or email with any questions, concerns, or needs that you might have.
Your partner in education,
Cathy Gilbert, School Counselor
There continues to be a lot of confusion about the role of the school counselor. Are they a therapist in the school setting, are they social workers, do they test students for special education? While school counselors do have a mental health background, the role of the school counselors is centered on helping students navigate their educational journey, focusing in three areas: academic, social-emotional, and college/career. Click on the image below to learn more about the school counselor's role.
