Reading is a healthy habit that should be a part of every 1st grader's daily routine. Your child might choose to read at home for a few minutes or an extended period of time. You and your child might discuss books that you are reading, doing a nightly read aloud, or simply choose to enjoy a book together.
Playing games like Boggle, Scrabble, and other word games are also great ways to practice skills and reading! Raz Kids is a great option too!
In Math, 1st graders are focusing on thinking skills. Some examples of activities and games that can help your child build critical thinking and encourage problem solving are: Blokus, math dice, card games, Monopoly, puzzles, checkers, and chess. Other great practice activities can be done on Zearn. Zearn offers online math practice that is aligned to our Eureka math curriculum.
To incorporate writing into a routine, you might choose to have a conversation about your day, tell a story about your day, have your child help you write a grocery list and have your child write thank you cards, emails, or friendly letters.
Please check the Briarwood Calendar for a current list of school events.

I am excited to be your child's 1st grade teacher this year! Briarwood is a special place to me because both of my children went to Briarwood. I have 2 children, Jacob and Kasey. Jacob will be graduating this year from Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, CA and our daughter Kasey is starting her sophomore year at WSU! My husband Steve has been with the Renton Fire Department for the last 23 years. I enjoy spending time with my family, gardening, and going on vacations! This will be my 28th year of teaching! I will be updating this site often so please check it frequently for information about our classroom and important dates. I look forward to a great year!
