Hi Families,

We had a great week in kindergarten!

Phonics/Daily 5

  • Practiced reading and writing our new sight words
    • will, be, with, all, she, out, not, are, for, little

  • Began Module 3 in Eureka math. Please check out the parent tip sheet attached for more details on what this module includes.
  • Students can:
    • Compare lengths using taller than and shorten than with aligned and non-aligned endpoints
    • Compare length measurements with string
    • Make a series of longer than and shorten than comparisons
    • Compare the length of linking cube sticks to a 5-stick

  • Began our Pattern book writing unit!
  • Students can:
    • Identify the pattern in different books (published, teacher & student examples)
    • Use the word wall to help us create a pattern for each page in our book
    • Write about the same topic or theme throughout the whole book

  • Explored living vs. nonliving
  • Learned that all plants and animals are living
  • Learned all living things need air, food & water to survive
  • Look at these different parts of plants and animals and explored how they are similar:
    • Scales
    • Shells
    • Wings
    • Feathers
    • Bones

How can I help at home?

  • Read with your child each night!
  • Practice beginning sounds
  • Practice writing sight words!! You say a sight word, and they write it without looking
  • Practice writing numbers 0-10 (extra challenge: work on numbers 11-20) without looking at the number
  • Practice drawing pictures to match a story and saying the number sentence (ex: I see 2 boys and 2 girls. 2 and 2 make 4)
  • Practice measuring objects and identifying as “shorter or longer” than a given object.
    • I sent home a string and a Popsicle stick. These were our measuring tools during math this week. Encourage your kindergartner to use them at home to measure objects in your house.
    • If you lost the string or Popsicle stick, give them another “measuring tool” it can really be anything, to use!
  • During our morning message, we have been practicing counting by 2’s. 5’s, 10’s and backward. This is something they LOVE and can easily be practiced at home.
  • Talk about the books you are reading at home! Comprehension skills are just as important as being able to read words in a book. Right now we are focusing on connections, visualizing and inferring.
  • Practice writing pattern books.
