This is my fourth year as the LAP-Book Club Specialist at Creekside after 17 years as either a first or second grade classroom teacher in the Issaquah School District. I am fortunate to work in this program as reading and teaching children to read is one of my passions! Outside of the classroom, I enjoy spending time with my husband, our four sons and their wives and six grandchildren...my has our family of 6 grown! I also enjoy photography, gardening, knitting, friends, golfing and travel. I look forward to a year of partnering with you and your child!
Upcoming Dates to Remember
Take home books are black/white copies of the books we have read in Book Club. Please let your child read the book to you, and then be sure to have them bring it back to school each day. I will then give your child a new book to take home. You will notice that your child may be quite successful in reading the books, which is the intent! The curriculum I use is set up on a 2 day rotation of lessons using “instructional” – student needs some guidance and “independent” – student is able to read and comprehend the book without guidance - reading levels. I have noticed huge growth in all of the students reading confidence and feel this is partly due to the fact that some days the students can say…”wow, that was easy to read”! While you are listening to your child read, please encourage them to remember to pause at the end of sentences and to also reflect the punctuation ( . ! ? ) in their voice. I call this “read the punctuation” which is what fluent readers do.
Scholastic Book Club - Use this website to find the reading level of books you have at home! Simply enter the title and author, then select guided reading levels. Once students have been assessed, I will let you know your child's current reading level,. Reading "just right books" ensures optimal growth in becoming a fluent reader.
