Ms. Mohney's Classroom

Welcome!

April 19, 2020

4/19/2020
Dear Families,
As most of you know, I am not updating my Connect site due to difficulties with the computer system I’m using. ALL important updates are sent to you via your home email that I have in our distribution list, as well as through Seesaw.

Please set aside time on Sunday / Monday to read through the weekly newsletter as ALL the information you need for the week will be laid out there for you. It is there for you and your children to allow for ample time to plan and set up a schedule for success as we continue to move forward with learning.

Every day there will be NEW Seesaw Must-Do Activities posted by 9:15 a.m. Any activity with “OPTIONAL” in the title IS optional, but activities that are not optional are recommended to be completed first.

Fridays will be a catch-up day: 1 Exit Ticket and Stop and Jot will be the only two required assignments on Fridays.

My hope was to create a system where more work was done OFF screens than on, but for time purposes, and for a more independent way of direct instruction, our lessons are online through Seesaw.

I will be reaching out to connect with you and your child for a family Zoom meeting where I can answer questions about Seesaw and online learning. We currently do not know when/how students will gain access to their items left at school, but we will let you know as soon as we find out. We also do not know how/what next fall will look like, but again, we will let you know as soon as we can. Even though we have been away from the building for over a month, there are still many unanswered questions for elementary schools as the district and state are working hard to make sure seniors graduate, align grading for high schools…and so on and so forth. Thank you for your flexibility, your patience, and collaboration as we are all trying to figure this out together.

Please continue to stay safe, do what is best for you and your family, and reach out if you have any questions.

My OFFICE HOURS through EMAIL will be on Tuesdays from 9:00 – 9:30 a.m. and Thursdays from 12:00 – 12:30 p.m. These office hours are meant for students/parents to ask quick questions and get a speedy response.

Can’t wait to see the amazing work students put forth this week as this is officially the start of Trimester 3!

Sincerely,
Ms. Mohney

March 12, 2020

Dear Families,
As you know, school for students is officially closed between March 13th through April 24th. I look forward to seeing our entire class again on April 27th. Please know that the district will communicate any changes through E-News, Jaguar News, the district webpage and any other media possible so that families are aware of what's going on.
I believe the district is meeting to talk about what the next coming weeks will look like and staff are required to be at school through March 17th.  We will continue to work our regular contract hours, so if there is something your child forgot, it will need to be arranged through me to be picked up by March 17th.  Everything they should need from our classroom should have been taken home today.
These are the items students brought home:
  • Time for Kids magazines (three new ones) and all old ones
  • Writer's notebook
  • Writing folder
  • Math notebook
  • Math Problem Set 3 (module 3)
  • Math Fraction Packet
  • Opinion Writing Rubic
  • Elephant Maze made by Ethan
  • Reading group book
  • Reading group assignments (old, recent, and next if applicable)
  • Zoochosis paper article for writing
  • "a healthful snack" unedited printed paragraph
  • Behaviors that Promote Learning worksheet
  • A gingerbread man outline worksheet
  • "Identify Your Mindset Questionnaire" worksheet
  • Free read reading book
  • Pencil box if they wanted any special supplies from it
Stop and Jots were requested by me so I can average their grades for report cards.
Information I shared with the class: (in no particular order)
  1. As of right now, school work is not required by the district over the school closure
  2. Please check (STUDENTS) your SeeSaw INBOX daily at 9:15 to check to any new assignments, activities, or messages from Ms. Mohney
  3. Please complete the work assigned (if you and your family choose) to the best of your ability - upload to SeeSaw in your portfolio, but directions will be written on assignments.
  4. The things I sent home will be items I may refer to - please keep them all in a safe place
  5. Book assignments are still due on the date written on the calendar (I will repost those dates for the specific books on the classroom website tomorrow)
  6. Science Fair Packet corrections are due by March 20th. Upload/scan/email, or take pictures and post on Seesaw for me to grade
  7. I would like to plan a book shopping event in the near future (optional)
  8. I would like to arrange some "lessons in the park" for us to touch base IF parents/kids feel safe and are able - they are not required and we talked about practicing social responsibility by staying x amount of feet from each other and being respectful of other people's choices
  9. RINGO presentations (I will post the calendar) if kids are scheduled to present, they can prepare a book and record themselves presenting on Seesaw, then upload for grades.
  10. Work that was turned in to me recently, I will POST on Seesaw in your child's portfolio. I am currently working on written report card summaries for each child because the comment section is limited on Skyward. I will hopefully be scanning those into the computer next week and emailing those to you (parent) individually.
  11. I will continue to post Where the Red Fern Grows recordings
  12. I plan to post Stop and Jot questions and read aloud Night of the Howling Dogs (our read aloud book) on Seesaw/youtube as well
  13. I may try to set up a youtube live session where some times we can possible do a lesson together --- we'll see. This is all so new and different!
If you have any questions at all (because I might be leaving something out that I shared with your kids), please reach out to me.  I am here to help us all through this time and know that the district is working on finding ways to support child care (what will that look like?), meals to families and more.  Again, per the district, school work is not required, but for me, 6 weeks is a long time, and if I can continue to teach and provide these tools and skills to your kids, then I will.
As we learn more, I will share more.
Thank you for your flexibility, your patience, and your support.
Let's continue on,
Mindy Mohney
