What we are working on.
Currently second graders are working on identifying coin values and calculating how much money several coins add up to. This is when knowing to count on from the largest number (ex. a quarter) comes in as being the most efficient way of combining the amounts. Skip counting by tens and fives is also a helpful strategy for adding up several coins. This is something you can practice and reinforce with your kiddo at home. In the second half of this module we will be revisiting measurement using inches as the unit. As well as some metric units (ex: cm).
In third grade the focus has been on finding the area of regular and irregular shapes. The students seem to be enjoying this unit, and finding it fun to figure out if bedroom A or B is bigger. J In preparation for the state testing this month we have been review efficient ways to multiply (skip count), as well as going over how to show, and read, data on graphs. Looking forward the next module is on just that – ‘Collecting and Displaying Data’.
