Winter Assembly: Monday, Dec. 9, 2019

1st Winter Break: Dec. 23 to Jan. 3

Writing Lab: Students have a daily journal entry which focuses on a skill each day. Mondays students will learn about prefixes, suffixes, and root words. Tuesdays students will learn rules for editing written work. Wednesdays students will learn about parts of speech and sentence structure. Thursdays students are learning about frequently used idioms, which helps with inference based skills. Fridays students are given a writing prompt and asked to do a quick write. The main focus for this week's lessons will be on parts of speech with a focus conjunctions. This is the pre-teaching needed prior to working on sentence diagramming. On Friday, we will be doing progress monitoring.

Thursdays students are learning about frequently used idioms, which helps with inference based skills. Fridays students are given a writing prompt and asked to do a quick write. This week we are continuing to read Freak the Mighty and learning how to restate a question when answering it. Overall, we will be focusing on comprehension strategies and short answer responses. The class is about half-way complete with reading the book and answering the chapter questions. On Thursday, student will participate in the first district requested reading assessment called STAR 360. There will be no progress monitoring due to the STAR 360 testing.

Learning strategies:  Students are setting weekly goals and reflecting about what they have learned in class. The focus this week is working in groups and applying the skills to preferred activities and non-preferred activities. This includes practicing how to be perceived as friendly, cooperative, and approachable, applying the basic rules for group work, how to stay connected with the group, how to work effectively with others, and how to give/receive suggestions while in a group. On Friday students will reflect on the goal he/she set for the week and have an individual conference with the teacher to review his/her goal, grades, and missing work.
