Using the phrase Stretch and Blend is much more powerful and complete rather than the phrase "sound it out". Watch Kari show us how she stretches the word (sounds it out) and then blends the sounds  together to get the word.


What's Missing is a GREAT game to practice how to read AND write sight words. Watch Kaulana and Mrs. Scott play and learn how to play with your child.


Thank you to those families who were able to come to Family Learning Night! We had a great time and hopefully, parents got a few more ideas of how to work with their children at home on reading and writing strategies. I made a video while I was sharing ideas with parents. Take a look if you'd like a refresher OR if you didn't get to attend Family Learning Night. I have a whiteboard and pen for EVERY student, even if you were unable to attend Family Learning Night. Take a Look



Cross Checking is a GREAT strategy! Watch Edgrinna as she uses cross checking beautifully. She is making sure the first letter of the word and the picture match. Great job Edgrinna!


Take a look! Watch Charlotte in action as she practices using "One to one correspondence". She is working on touching under each word as she says it. This is important for students to understand that each group of letters makes a word. It also helps students focus their eyes on the text they're reading so they can see familiar sight words. Charlotte also hunts for the sight word "the". Learning sight words is critical to students learning to read fluently.


New Video!! WatchTobias put together his name puzzle and identify the names of the letters and sounds in his name! If you're wondering what to do with those letter cards in your child's baggie, take a look!

With schools closed for the rest of the school year, please join me in learning online:

1) Your classroom teacher will be posting to SeeSaw every Monday with a schedule. I will post activities on Tuesdays and Thursdays right on your clasroom teacher's SeeSaw page. The activities will be specific to your child. Watch this video for more information:

Dyslexia Family Engagement Forum - February 6

Families interested in connecting with the Issaquah School District regarding support for students with dyslexia are invited to a community forum hosted at the Administration Building at 5150 220th AVE SE, Issaquah from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. The purpose of the forum is to facilitate two-way communication, collaboration, and shared learning related to supporting students with dyslexia. Two additional forums will be held on March 5 and May 21. Families are welcome to attend one, two, or all three meetings. The February 6 session will include active listening opportunities and time for families to share their stories, interests, and learnings with ISD staff.


Thursday, January 30th is Family Literacy Night from 5:30-7:00 in the library at IVE! Please look for a flier to come home soon. Please R.S.V.P. right away so we know how much pizza to order. I'm looking forward to seeing our students and their families!



October 22-26 Reading Groups will begin. If you have questions now about whether or not your child might qualify for LAP or Title reading clubs, don't hesitate to reach out. I'm happy to answer questions and guide you in the right direction if I don't know the answer.

Dear Parents,

Thank you for entrusting your child’s education and safety to me. I believe that creating a kind and positive environment builds a positive classroom community. I believe that every child in our room belongs there, wants to succeed and our class is not complete without them. Our classroom is a wonderful place. I use a lot of positive reinforcement to promote desired behaviors and school rules. As a class, we make a promise to one another about how we’ll act in class using the basic principles of the school rules. For example the kids may choose the phrases be kind and keep your hands and feet to yourself to put on the I promise poster to reflect what being respectful looks like, sounds like and feels like.

If for some reason, there is a behavior concern, these are the steps I take.

  • ·        Remind student of appropriate/expected behavior.
  • ·        Ask student to take time away from the group (take a break) until they are ready to join back in with appropriate behavior
  • ·        Have a brief chat (one on one) with the student before they rejoin the class reinforcing expected behaviors
  • ·        If necessary, have the student practice the desired behavior for a portion of their recess when they can have my undivided attention. This shows the student and me that they can perform the behavior successfully and we celebrate that success and talk about how they’ll now be able to do that in the larger group
  • ·        If necessary, a phone call or note home
  • ·        If the previous steps have not worked, ask the dean of students (office) to take some time with the student to problem solve. Parents will be notified through a phone call or a letter home if a child is sent to the dean.

Please take the time to discuss these important rules with your child.

It's June!! It's almost time to say goodbye to a wonderful year of learning and growing! I am always excited about the end of the year and also a little bit nervous. I'm excited about all of the growth students have made and the fun, relaxing days ahead. I'm also nervous about students and families getting so involved in summer fun, that they might forget that reading and writing over the summer will help students maintain and even grow the skills they've worked so hard to master during the school year. Check out our first Parent Pipeline! The purpose of the one-page newsletter is to explain a strategy that students are learning with me in reading club and how you can help your child at home. Our first Parent Pipeline is about using the first and last letter to cross check a word. We've just begun cross checking in reading club. Some students are using just the first letter plus the picture clue to decide if a word is right. Once they've mastered this, they're ready to move on to using the first and the last letter. Take a look at the Parent Pipeline for a more detailed description.

Our take-home reading program begins as soon as the program begins ! This is their reading homework. In grades K-3, your child will bring a take-home bag back and forth to school every day. Please help your child remember that they need to read their book at least three times. They can read it to moms, dads, aunties, uncles, grandmas, grandpas, dogs, cats, fish, stuffed animals, etc. They can read it three times to the same person or to three different people/things. Please encourage your child to , use the strategies on their strategy card. Students also have a baggie with 3X5 cards in it. This baggie has a strategy card, letters, words, and/or  "chunks" on the cards. Take a look at the back of the card for explanations on how to use each card for practice on a reading skill.

In grades 4 and 5 students are expected to read a minimum of 20 minutes per night.
